The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-2 last night at PPG Paints Arena. The Avalanche avenged a 7-2 loss on their home ice to the Penguins over a week ago, and handed the Pens their third loss in their last four games. Colorado had built a 4-1 lead by the end of the first period.
The Penguins have now been passed in the Metropolitan Division by the Columbus Blue Jackets, who defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 last night. The Pens hold on to the final Metro playoff spot by one point over the New York Islanders, who lost 4-3 to the Chicago Blackhawks last night.
The Pens visit Ottawa Thursday night.
Ottawa defeated the New York Rangers 2-1 last night, holding the Rangers to a record-low 10 shots in the game. Ottawa currently holds the final Eastern Conference Wild Card position. They have 85 points this season. The Penguins have 86 points. The Senators have defeated the Penguins twice this season, by scores of 4-0 and 3-2.
