With more eyes than usual upon a state house race in Butler County, Democrat Brandon Dukes appears to have come out on top.
According to unofficial results from the Butler County Bureau of Election, Dukes defeated Republican Scott Timko by just 88 votes to win the special election in the 12th Legislative District. Dukes earned 8,434 votes to Timko’s 8,346 votes.
Voter turnout was just shy of 32 percent. Dukes also received over 3,500 mail-in votes compared to Timko’s 1,787.
The unofficial results also do not include any provisional ballots at the moment.
The district comprises most of southwestern Butler County, encompassing all of Cranberry north to Zelienople and east to Adams Township.
It was an apparent uphill climb for Dukes, who takes over a long-held Republican seat. Dukes replaces Republican Stephenie Scialabba, who won her last election in 2024 by nearly 30 percent.
Dukes is a Cranberry resident and becomes the first Democratic state representative in Butler County since Jaret Gibbons held the 10th Legislative District, before his defeat in 2016 to now current State Representative Aaron Bernstine.
Dukes will be sworn-in to Harrisburg in the near future, but will be back on the campaign trail soon. He and Timko will be vying for the 12th Legislative District seat once again in November.
