Grove City high school wrestler Chase Karenbauer won a national championship with an 8-5 win over reigning world champion Keegan Bassett Sunday to win the U.S. Open 17U title 55kg. He swept a best-of-three championship final, adding an 11-9 win over Bassett in the first mat match. The U.S. Open Championships were held in Las Vegas.
With the win, Karenbauer will represent the United States at the World Championships in July being held in Azerbaijan. Karenbauer had won a Pennsylvania state championship earlier this year.
