The Pittsburgh Pirates host the Baltimore Orioles for their home opener this afternoon at PNC Park. First pitch is set for 4:12pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 3:45pm.
The Pirates have called up 19-year old shortstop Konnor Griffin, who will make his major league debut Friday for the Pirates home opener. He was the Pirates first-round draft pick in the 2024 MLB draft. He will become the first teenager to play in a major league game since Juan Soto in 2018.
Griffin was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis to begin his season after a much-hyped pre-season. In his first 16 at-bats at Triple-A, Griffin accumulated seven hits, including three doubles. He struck out four times while walking five times. He had been sent down during the Pirates spring training camp after he batted .171, despite four home runs.
The Pirates are also making the move because Griffin instantly improves the team’s defense at shortstop. The Bucs have played Jared Triolo and Nick Gonzales there to start the season, but only the one-win Chicago White Sox have been worse based on defensive runs saved at that position.
First pitch for Saturday’s game is 4:05pm. Easter Sunday’s game begins at 1:35pm.
The Bucs host the San Diego Padres for three games beginning Monday.
