The Pittsburgh Pirates were shutout 4-0 in their series opener against the Chicago Cubs last night at PNC Park. Rookie Braxton Ashcraft took the loss. He allowed three runs on six hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out four. The Pirates managed three hits in the game. Former Pirate Jameson Taillon allowed two of the hits over six shutout innings.
The Bucs stranded 10 runners, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
The Pirates celebrated the legendary Roberto Clemente during the game. All Pirates players wore his retired #21-jersey for Clemente Night.
The second game of the series will be played tonight at 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15. Paul Skenes will start for the Bucs.
Despite having the best record in the minor leagues this season, the Pirates High Single-A affiliate Greensboro was swept out of the playoffs.
The Altoona Curve also lost five of six to Erie last week to fall short of an Eastern League regular-season division title. The Curve will host the SeaWolves beginning tonight in a best-of-three Eastern League playoff series. Game two and game three, if necessary, will be played in Erie.
